Predator Free Newstead community launch

It’s great to see a new predator free group getting started just down the road in Newstead.

Newstead local Melinda joined us for our Tamahere Reserve gully walk earlier this year. She’d already done a huge amount of restoration work in her own gully — and by the end of the walk, the rest of us were doing a fair bit of arm-twisting about her starting something locally.

She took up the challenge.

Melinda has since brought together a group of Newstead residents interested in predator control and restoring their own patch. PFT Chair Rod Berry went along to their first gathering to share some of what we’ve learned since getting started in Tamahere, while Greg from the Central Waikato Predator Free Hub provided practical trapping advice and support.

Predator Free Newstead is now up and running with its own Facebook group.

We’re very happy to share what we’ve learned with neighbouring communities. Looking at you, Matangi - who’s going to pick up the baton? The more connected predator control becomes across the wider area, the better for our native wildlife.
