About Predator Free Tamahere
Who we are
Predator Free Tamahere is a local, volunteer, community-led project helping landowners and residents increase predator control and protect native wildlife across Tamahere’s gardens, gullies, streams, river margins and habitat corridors.
We operate through Predator Free Tamahere Conservation Trust, a registered New Zealand charity CC64177.
Our vision is to hear korimako/bellbird singing again throughout Tamahere.
Our work takes place within the rohe of Ngāti Hauā, and we acknowledge their deep connection to these lands and waterways.
What we do
We focus on practical predator control, especially rats, mice, possums and mustelids — stoats, weasels and ferrets.
Our work includes:
helping landowners and residents choose practical predator control options
supporting people improve their predator control set-up
building a clearer picture of local predator control coverage
encouraging Trap.NZ recording where possible
lending, trialling and supplying traps where appropriate
supporting traplines in public reserves, gullies and priority habitat areas
sharing practical local advice
Rabbit control is a local issue, but it is not our main focus.
Why it matters
Tamahere’s gullies, streams, river corridors, bush blocks and gardens provide important habitat for native birds, bats, lizards and insects.
Predators move across property boundaries, so local predator control works best when residents, landowners and neighbours are connected.
