Trap
Our volunteers build tunnel boxes with T-rex rat traps for $25 each. To buy one, make an online payment to Predator Free Tamahere (ASB 12-3268-0077969-00) and collect it from the Waikato District Council Tamahere hub (Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm) by the Tamahere pharmacy.
Tamahere properties can borrow a Flipping Timmy possum trap for free, thanks to funding from Waikato Regional Council. Contact us to check eligibility.
For hard-to-reach areas like gullies or steep river edges, try the NZ Autotrap AT220, which auto-resets and targets possums, rats, and mice. See our tips on using the AT220.

Bait
When using rat bait, always place it in secure bait stations (sold locally). This prevents rats from hoarding bait and keeps pets and wildlife safe.
Choose first-generation baits such as Diphacinone (Ditrac) — they’re safer around pets. For best results, follow a “pulsed baiting” approach: offer bait only at certain times of the year rather than continuously. This reduces bait use, saves money, and prevents rats from becoming bait-shy.
Read our update for detailed info on pulsing bait. For additional resources, check out Predator Free NZ’s lifestyle block pest control guide.

Donate
Help us reach our goal by donating a trap today! With Give A Trap, it’s simple to contribute, and each donation brings us closer to a predator-free Tamahere. Read more about this in our project updates.
